RightScale Opens Management Platform to User-Developed Cloud Images

Customers and Partners can now build RightScale-enabled machine images or use existing cloud image libraries

Early Bird for Cloud Expo Santa Clara

At the RightScale User Meetup being held at Cloud Expo at the Javits Center in NYC, RightScale has announced that customers and partners can, for the first time, use the RightScale Cloud Management Platform to deploy, monitor and manage cloud servers launched with their own cloud machine images.  Cloud machine images, such as Amazon Machine Images (AMIs), are the most basic building blocks of cloud computing and are used to configure servers in the cloud. Now, in addition to accessing the collection of cloud images provided by RightScale, users can develop their own images or leverage other existing cloud images within RightScale's management platform to simplify deployment and automate management of applications running in the cloud.  With this new capability, virtually any cloud server can be managed by RightScale's automated cloud management platform.

"This new capability opens the benefits of RightScale to a much broader audience, further establishing it as the platform of choice for cloud computing management," said Thorsten von Eicken, RightScale CTO.  "Many organizations must develop their own cloud images to adhere to IT governance and security policies or to use specific software stacks in the cloud.  Now, they can build their own cloud images or leverage their investments in cloud development, while also achieving the productivity and agility advantages delivered by the RightScale platform."

‘RightScale-enabling' Cloud Images Improves Control, Automation, and Agility
Customers, systems integrators and ISVs can now build their own cloud images - or leverage existing cloud image libraries - and quickly enable them to work within a RightScale-managed cloud environment. A newly released RightScale ServerTemplate -- which defines how RightScale dynamically configures servers at runtime -- lets users insert their own software stack and bundle it with the lightweight, "RightLink" open source agent to quickly create a RightScale-enabled cloud image.  RightScale has also published a set of packages that install RightLink into existing cloud images. These new capabilities let a broad audience take advantage of the image-building methodology designed for the cloud and refined by RightScale over the past four years.

For organizations that require control over the creation of cloud images to ensure compliance with industry regulations or corporate policies, creating RightScale-enabled images offers complete control and auditability with all the automation and portability of RightScale. The ServerTemplate used to build RightScale-enabled images is provided in source code form, so users can easily adapt any of the specifics to their requirements, and the open source RightLink agent is publically available for inspection.

RightScale-enabling cloud images opens up alternative distribution and delivery options for many ISV offerings. For software packages that involve lengthy installation or steps that are difficult to automate, this new capability provides the option to bundle software into a RightScale-enabled image that can be installed as part of a managed, dynamically configured and automated cloud deployment.

For customers and systems integrators who serve multiple constituents, RightScale-enabling images can significantly improve productivity while preserving their investments in cloud image development.  Existing Amazon Machine Images (AMIs) can be quickly enabled to take advantage of RightScale's Cloud Management Platform.  Over time, users can move image components into more easily managed, modular and variable-based ServerTemplates that leverage the full power of RightScale's built-in automation.  The result: fewer cloud images to manage and more agile, automated cloud deployments.
